So True- So False- Does Bob Dylan Really Have a Ra

26 Sep

Pablo Dylan So True So False, STSF Bob Dylan is, of course, a musical legend, who reinvented folk and rock. So you might be surprised to hear that a hip-hop-loving 15-year-old kid with the same last name is rapping and producing up a storm—and is claiming to be related to the iconic Tambourine Man.

MeetPablo Dylan, who just released a mixtape called “10 Minutes,” which has been getting some attention. He says he is in the studio working on releasing even more music now that he’s getting noticed. But does he really swim in the same gene pool as the “Blowin’ in the Wind” singer? Or is he just using his famous name to sell some tunes?

You’ll be surprised to learn that his DNA claim is…

So true!

Pablo, who even resembles his legendary grandpa with his sleepy eyes, is the spawn of the iconic singer’s son Jesse, a famous music video director who has worked with Lenny Kravitz and the Black Eyed Peas.

And what does the rapping grandkid of Dylan have to say about his family connection?

“I mean, really, my grandfather, I consider him the Jay-Z of his time,” Pablo told AllHipHop. “He definitely has a legacy that a lot of people look up to. He feels strongly about my music and I love him to death.”

Still, even though he is riding on his grandfather’s fame, he wants people to focus on his music, not his family.

“Of course we do two different things, and I don’t want poeple to see me for what he has done,” added Pablo. “But, what I have done, I mean from a musical and personal standpoint, is definitely influenced by him.”

In fact, Pablo raps about gramps in the debut single, “Top of the World” (above):

“I’m a grandson of a man nothin’ less than legendary/that’s a lotta pressure so IBerry Gordy/I am very Motown/bitch Imma get that crown/whileI’m at it I may reinvent sound.”

The times—and the lyrics—sure are a changin’.

Adele Talks Beyoncé, Crushing on Alec Baldw

26 Sep

Adele, Vogue CoverVogue

Scoring total Grammy domination and the cover of Vogue all in the same weekend? Now that’s a one-two punch.

Fresh from her six-for-six Grammy wins last night, Adele has turned covergirl, getting in touch with her inner fashionista by taking the March cover of Vogue.

During the interview, the bubbly personality’s conversation ran the gamut as she dished on everything from her vocal scare to taking time off from singing, the public’s biggest misconceptions about her, her surprising star crush, her even more surprising star nursemaid and which artist she’s most inspired by.

Oh, and the fact that she’s done with being a “bitter witch.”

MORE: Grammys light up for Adele

First up: the storyline that’s dominated the majority of her past few months—her surgery and lengthy recovery. Up until last year’s hemorrghage, Adele said she had “never had any problems with my voice, ever.”

Coincidentally enough, she wasn’t alone.

John Mayer had it done at the same time as I did, and he really helped me be chilled out about it,” she told the mag, rattling off a list of other artists who’ve been there, lent support for that. “Roger Daltrey‘s had loads of stuff done; Steven Tyler reached out; Elton John.”

And in a way, Adele said that the surgery came as something of a blessing in disguise to the self-described “loud and bolshie” singer.

“I think I just needed to be silenced. And when you are silent, everyone else around you is silent. So the noise in my life just stopped…It was brilliant. It was my body telling me to fix me. I had so much time to kind of go over things and get over things, which is amazing…In fact, my entire life has changed in the last 10 weeks. I’ve never been so happy, and I love it.”

Which is a point that apparently seems to be lost on her nevertheless adoring fans.

“People think that I’m f–king miserable. They are really surprised when they meet me that I’m chatty and bubbly and kind of quite carefree really. I’m the total opposite of my records.”

And while her records have so far been rather angsty, Adele said she’s not the devastated ex she may often come across as to potential suitors.

“Come on! I’m wifey material!” she said. “I’m great…I am never writing a breakup record again, by the way. I’m done with being a bitter witch.”

And done with everything else for not quite as long.

“I am f–king off for four or five years. If I am constantly working, my relationships fail. So at least now I can have enough time to write a happy record. And be in love and be happy. And then I don’t know what I’ll do. Get married. Have some kids. Plant a nice vegetable patch.”

“I love Alec Baldwin,” she noted. “Oh, my God, I’ve got the biggest crush on him in that film. He’s so sexy.”

And he’s not the only A-lister who’s earned her approval. Adele also had no qualms about openly gushing over Beyoncé.

“She’s been a huge and constant part of my life as an artist since I was about 10 or 11. I love how all of her songs are about empowerment. Even when she’s married and Jay-Z put a ring on it, she releases ‘Single Ladies.’ Go get yours. Go get what you deserve. I think she’s really inspiring.”

It’s probably safe to say the feeling is mutual.

Listen! Jay-Z Raps About the Arrival of Daughter B

26 Sep

Jay-Z, Empire State Building

To call Jay-Z a proud papa is probably an understatement.

Less than 48 hours after he and wife Beyoncé welcomed daughter Blue Ivy into the world, the rapper has already expressed his happiness in a song titled “Glory.”

The new father just posted the heartfelt track to his Life + Times website along with a photo of the Empire State Building lit up, naturally, in blue with the caption: Life just got REALLY good.”

“I paint the sky blue, my greatest creation was you,” he notes early on in the recording, adding: “The most amazing feeling I feel, words can’t describe what I’m feeling for real.”

He goes on to creatively reference his wife with such lyrics as “You’re the child of destiny/You’re the child of my destiny/You’re my child with the child from Destiny’s Child/That’s a helluva recipe.”

Later, Jay-Z notes how Blue Ivy was conceived in Paris and reveals that Beyoncé once suffered a miscarriage.

“Last time the miscarriage was so tragic/We was afraid you’d disappear/But nah baby, you’re magic,” he raps.

He ends by saying that “the most beautiful thing in this world is daddy’s little girl” and “life is a gift, open it up.”

Well, with a daddy like this, it sounds like this little girl’s life is off to a pretty a good start.

A Voice Controversy- Adam Levine Defends Tony Lucc

27 Aug

THE VOICE, Tony Lucca, Adam LevineJustin Lubin/NBC

Despite what Tony Lucca‘s critics are saying on social media, due credit was given when The Voice contestant sang “99 Problems” last night.

That’s the word from Adam Levine, who defended his protégé on Twitter today in the wake of accusations by some of the show’s viewers that Lucca failed to acknowledge that his countrified take on Jay-Z‘s hit was actually a cover of a bluegrass version performed by English singer-songwriter Hugo.

In fact, the Voice coach clarified that an attribution was made but got lost somewhere in the edit.

“I DID mention this but it wasn’t used. Must give credit where credit is due. The version that inspired us…HUGO!,” Levine tweeted, including a link to a Youtube video of the latter’s rendition.

The way producers cut the show gave some folks the impression that Lucca came up with the bluegrass arrangement of “99 Problems” all on his own. Fellow coach Blake Shelton probably didn’t help the situation and created even more confusion when he praised the crooner saying, “What a really cool version of that song, by the way, man.”

Angry fans subsequently gave a big thumbs-down to the aspiring popster online.

“Kind of a rip-off on the Voice tonight. That wasn’t Lucca’s take on 99 Problems, it was originally done by Hugo. Look it up.. #disappoint,” tweeted @codymillard.

Another fan named Justin Flaws complained: “So the dude on The Voice just blatantly ripped off Hugo’s cover of Jay Z’s 99 Problems and tried to pass it off as his own… Weak dude.”

The supposed Hugo diss wasn’t the only controversy to come out of last night’s episode.

Tensions came to a boil between Levine and Christina Aguilera after the latter judge bashed Lucca’s performance as being denigrating to women.

“I thought you sounded great. I mean, you have a really cool voice,” said the diva before adding with a slight hint of acid, “I know your beautiful wife and your daughter and family are here tonight, and I just thought, you know, the lyrical connotation was a little derogatory towards women, you know, but all in all it was good fun.”

The Maroon 5 frontman promptly fired back.

“First of all, just to clarify, so you all know—the intent behind the song…is life getting at you. Things bringing you down,” he snapped. “We’re not referring to women, we’re referring to everything.”

When Aguilera pointed out, “The lyric is ‘If you’re having girl problems. It is girl. It’s girl,” Levine retorted, “It’s called a metaphor.”

Ouch.

In any case, Lucca can pat himself on the back for making it to the final four. He’ll battle Juliet Simms, Jermaine Paul and Chris Mann for this season’s crown and the grand prize of a recording contract when The Voice finale airs Tuesday.

2012 Grammys- Five Biggest Jaw-Droppers!

27 Aug

Chris BrownKevin Winter/Getty Images

What was left for the Grammy Awards?

Sadly, the world’s collective jaw dropped Saturday upon hearing the news that Whitney Houston‘s voice had been silenced forever, so it seemed unfathomable that—barring an Album of the Year loss for Adele (hmph, as if!)—anything could shock last night.

Oh, but there’s always something. Or, in this case, five things:

MORE: Grammys Light Up for Adele, Foo Fighters and Kanye West

1. Grammy Kiss-Kisses and Makes Up With Chris Brown: Last year he was nominated, but this year, Breezy picked up his first Grammy—Best R&B Album for FA.M.E., no less—and was welcomed back like the prodigal son. We’re not saying that Brown, who’s been spending a lot of time coincidentally showing up at the same clubs as Rihanna over the last couple months, should be banned from winning awards (he already won a handful of BET Awards last year), or that he wasn’t musically deserving of this one. It’s just that, in 2009, Brown was arrested for assaulting Rihanna the night before the Grammys. So the rapt standing-O from the crowd Sunday was…interesting, that’s all.

Foo Fighters, Dave GrohlKevin Winter/Getty Images 2. Ryan Seacrest, Literal Foo Fighter: Seacrest had to be introduced twice tonight because Dave Grohl, onstage accepting the Foo Fighters‘ Best Rock Performance Grammy for “Walk,” just wouldn’t shut up! Not only did the go-away music start, but the lights dimmed, and yet Grohl’s screed against technology continued. His point was lovely, that learning how to play instruments and devoting one’s self to the craft is more authentic than cranking up the computer enhancements, but…dude. Do you want people to download your stuff on their evil computers or not? Seacrest had already been announced once when Grohl howled, “Long live rock ‘n’ roll!” Maybe this wasn’t so much a jaw-dropper as it was a disbelieving wince, followed by an embarrassed crinkling of the eyes.

3. Grammy Dropout: Where the heck was Kanye West?! Three-time nominee Jay-Z missing out, we understand. He and Beyoncé just had a baby. But Kanye led the entire field with seven nominations—and he won four, including Best Rap Performance during the live show! Doesn’t he like to speak when it’s his turn? Maybe it was his form of protesting My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy‘s snub in the Album of the Year category (though it gave him his fourth Grammy for Best Rap Album). Anyway, it’s a shame he wasn’t there, because everything is more interesting when Kanye is in the house.

Katy PerryJohn Shearer/WireImage 4. Katy Perry Powers Up: Well, hel-lo. The pop princess started off with “E.T.” (another moment Kanye could have shared and chose to miss) before segueing into something new—and awesomely fitting for the occasion. Perry, known for explosive stage antics more than powerhouse pipes (live, at least), ripped into “Part of Me,” which hits iTunes today as the first official single from the delicious-sounding Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection. “This is the part of me that you’re never gonna ever take away from me,” goes the indepedence anthem. “Throw your sticks and stones, throw your bombs and your blows, but you’re not gonna break my soul.” Was that the recently single star trying to send a message? If so, we heard it loud and clear!

Justin Vernon, Bon IverKevin Winter/Getty Images 5. Good Show, Bon Iver: Once again, the Recording Academy ignored the numbers and took a stab at proving to the cool kids that it knows what’s up in choosing Bon Iver for Best New Artist—kind of an out-of-touch move in and of itself considering the ever-morphing indie-folk outfit fronted by Justin Vernon released a debut album in 2007. Unlike 2010-11’s resident blossoming flower,Nicki Minaj, who was all over the place these past 15 months and is considered one of the freshest, most exciting hip-hop artists to come along since Drake—who lost out on Best New Artist last year to Esperanza Spalding.

Oh, those Academy hipsters. What are we going to do with them?

Bon Iver put it best: “Thank you to all the voters, of course. Sweet. Sweet hookup.”

No kidding.

Five Reasons the VMAs Were Record Huge

19 Aug

Beyonce Steve Granitz/WireImage

Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards scored the show’s—and the network’s—biggest-ever audience: 12.4 million.

Five guesses as to why:

RELATED: Lady Gaga’s new guy—and other jaw-droppers

1. Beyoncé’s baby news: When Twitter reports that Mrs. Jay-Z‘s in-show announcement generated a record-number of tweets-per-second, then it’s hard not to conclude the news was a big deal to people who watch the VMAs—or who might be tempted to watch them once they saw all the tweets. (The VMAs, remember, do not air live in all time zones; West Coasters could’ve seen the headlines, and adjusted their viewing plans accordingly.)

2. The Twitter factor: Forbes isn’t buying it, but we are. Just five years ago, the VMAs were sick, as in sickly. The show had lost half its audience from its heyday. Then Twitter, which busted out in 2007, helped put the must-see back in must-see TV, and, aside from blips here and there, awards shows across the board have been ticking upward ever since. If people have something to tweet about (see: No. 1), people have a reason to tune in.

3. The Hunger Games factor: Once upon a time, Twilight saved the MTV Movie Awards, so it’s not inconceivable that the debut of new footage from a franchise possessed of Twilight-esque fervor boosted the VMAs.

4. Lady Gaga: Either her Little Monsters got word she was opening her show, and/or the world got word that a woman (who, granted, was playing a man) was opening a show without the help of a pole dance, and got really curious as to what that would look like.

5. Hurricane Irene: It took blame for ruining Paul Rudd‘s opening weekend, shouldn’t it get credit for keeping folks at home in front of their MTV? (Now, as for how folks were watching their MTV without power…? Haven’t figured that part out yet.)

Elsewhere, here’s a quick look at some of the other TV week’s ratings winners:

• The Weather Channel: Obviously.

Jersey Shore—the one that aired before the VMAs: Obviously.

Jersey Shore–the one that aired in its regular time slot: Always.
